BIOGRAPHY OF FRANCISCO BORES

Francisco Bores (Madrid, 1898 - Paris, 1972)

After abandoning the careers of Civil Engineering and Law, Francisco Bores devoted himself exclusively to painting since 1916.

Around 1923, Bores came into contact with the ultraist movement in Madrid, participating in the gatherings at the Pombo and Gijón cafés, while collaborating with woodcuts in several magazines such as Alfar, Horizonte and Revista de Occidente.

In 1925, Bores participated in the Iberian Artists Exhibition, and that same year he moved to Paris, where he took up residence. In the French capital, he joined the group of Spanish artists established there, such as Hernando Viñes and Pancho Cossío, who would give rise to what would become known as the School of Paris.

During his stay in Paris, Bores assimilated the influence of various avant-garde movements, such as the cubism of Picasso and Gris, the post-impressionism of Cèzanne and the fauvism of Derain and Matisse. His artistic production evolved as follows:

From 1925 to 1928, Bores was influenced by cubism (Naturaleza muerta sobre la pared, 1927), surrealism (La danza de las corbatas, 1927) and abstraction (Composición, 1927).
Between 1929 and 1933, he returned to figuration, but in a reduced, essential manner, stripped of all anecdotal or descriptive content. This was the stage of fruit-painting.
From 1934 onwards, his style evolved towards a return to interiors and spatial synthesis, in a more lyrical period focused on interior scenes and still lifes, influenced by Fauvism in the use of color in works such as Woman in her Room (1937).
Undoubtedly, Francisco Bores is one of the most important representatives of the School of Paris, and his work is represented in the most important museums in Europe.
