Roig, Pau

Pau Roig i Cisa (1879-1955):

Pau Roig i Cisa was a prominent Catalan painter, born on December 16, 1879 in Barcelona into a bourgeois family. From an early age he showed artistic talent, which led him to study at the Escola de Belles Arts de Barcelona (popularly known as La Llotja), where he was trained in academic painting and classical technique. During his youth, he was influenced by the Catalan modernist movement, although over time his style evolved towards a luminous realism.

Roig excelled especially in the genre of portraiture and landscape painting, in which he masterfully captured the light, detail and psychology of his models. Many of his portraits represent members of the Catalan bourgeoisie, which allowed him to acquire notoriety in the artistic circles of the time.

In addition to his career in Catalonia, Pau Roig spent a significant part of his life in France, a country that deeply marked his work. During his stay in Paris, he came into contact with the European artistic avant-garde of the time, although he always maintained his attachment to realism. He participated in several exhibitions both in Spain and France, gaining recognition for his refined technique and sensitivity in the use of color.

Throughout his life, Roig received numerous private commissions and participated in group and solo exhibitions that consolidated his prestige. However, despite his talent, his work did not achieve the international projection of other contemporary artists.

Pau Roig died in 1955, leaving an artistic legacy that, although not always recognized on a large scale, constitutes a valuable contribution to the Catalan artistic panorama of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
